The Rush Job

One of the things that concern me most as a "driving instructor" are students wanting to rush through drivers training. I understand that the students are excited, but learning how to drive is not something you should rush.

For example, when learning how to ride a bike, it can take weeks. You get on, you fall off. You get on and fall off again until you learn to balance yourself. Once you learn balance then you have to learn how to steer. This can go on for weeks. Why would driving be any different? It is more difficult, and you have the added issue that you can harm yourself and others if you make a mistake. It should not be takin lightly. No one can be considered a fully competent driver with just 6 hours of training. If you manage to keep the car straight you still are not prepared for all the scenarios that can take place.

Practice is crucial. Anyone trying to learn how to drive must be aware of this. Drivers training goes hand in hand with the practice that is expected for the purpose of learning. The DMV requires 50 hours of practice. Parents sign their students permit stating that they have completed this required practice. But I have seen parents hand students the keys and allow them to drive alone, which is illegal. Or they assume that all that is needed is 6 hours of training. 😂. I like to think of myself as Wonder Woman, but I know I am not a wizard!

Driving is dangerous. It can result in injuries and even death. We must take it seriously. It is not the one thing you should skimp on.
