How does fear affect a driving lesson?
Many times, I begin a driving lesson under the assumption that the student is either excited or fearful. A certain level of fear is to be expected. But every now and then I get a student who is deathly afraid.
They may want to learn but anxiety and fear are palpable and driving lessons can be difficult.
With every student I try to let them know that fear is ok. It is expected. Then I let them know that I have a brake on my side of the vehicle and that I can help them steer from my side of the car. Then I advise them to try and relax as much as possible.
Most people do not realize how much their physical reaction can cause an accident. Breathing, listening to soothing music and reassuring affirmations can greatly help someone experiencing anxiety.
Parking lots are a great place to begin, if your driver is fearful. Keeping calm and giving clear instructions is also a big help.
Take small steps. Go over the equipment in the car. Explaining each tool. knowledge is power. But most importantly speak in a soothing voice. The number one complaint for a fearful student is that they were yelled at. The softer the voice the better the response. Raising your voice only if the circumstance is truly urgent. Before you know it , your student is driving like a pro!
